needs two people. open windows, open the four catches (two in front, two at the sides of the hardtop. then lift hardtop over car, fit the chrome rear receivers on the hardtop over the two chrome pins behind the back deck, then let the front down over the windshield. go to the back, and push the receivers down and forward to seat the pins firmly within them. then, close the catches in front and on the side, securing them to the corresponding item on the car, to hold them secure. can be done by one person, but you may scratch the finish on the car. If you have the hardtop harness, no problem.

What are Mazda Miata Frankenstein Bolts?
Miata Frankenstein Bolts are hardtop posts available to all Miatas from 1990-2005. They are equipped on Miatas that have removable hardtops. The Frankenstein bolts are mounted on the small chrome pieces near the upper corners of the trunk. The rear of the hardtop has two chrome covers that include bolts and shims that will tighten around the frankentstein bolts to secure the rear of the hardtop to the car. If your Miata does not have them, they can purchased to replaced the two chrome bolts closest to the rear window on the chrome piece. While installing them with a Phillips head screwdriver, Loctite is recommended to ensure the bolts do not back out. While not safe to do so, I have installed a hardtop without the Frankenstein bolts to see what would happen. Running only the front latches attached, I was able to drive around with minimal risk up to 60mph. Above 60mph, the generated air began lifting the rear of the hardtop in the air, creating a 1-2inch gap between the hardtop and the car. Do so at your own risk, but if you want to purchase a hardtop, do not have the means to carry it by truck and do not have Frankenstein bolts, it is relatively safe to mount it to your Miata for transport at low speeds.

Hardtops do not typically replace soft tops, they are an addition. When you use a hardtop, you typically place the soft top in the down position, and then mount the hardtop on the car. Some owners enjoy a hardtop only and will permanently remove the soft top, but it is not mandatory. Hardtop will mount to the windshield latch points similar to the soft top. The rear of the hardtop will also require two Frankenstein bolts, which will replace two of the chrome screws located on the chrome metal strips behind the soft top on the outside of the car. It will also require you to purchase side strikers so that the hardtop is firmly mounted on the sides. The side strikers will be mounted in the side panel just before the seat belt towers. It requires cutting the plastic panels, which can be done with a small rotary tool. All years will have hardtops that can be used. Be aware that some hardtops will not have defrosters and others will. If you are purchasing used, be mindful that a hardtop with a defroster may not have the correct defroster pigtail to mate to your Miata year. In which case you can replace the pigtail if needed.
