Use a screwdriver to release the hood latch through the front grille. Take a look at the hood latch on another car to get an idea of how they work.
Opening the hood on a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am is very easy to do. The hood is opened by pulling on the hood release latch inside the car on the drivers side. After the latch is pulled the hood will release. The hood is then opened by pulling the second release under the hood.
Pop the hood theirs a black box with some latches on the side, pop the latches lift the top and then pull the old air fliter out and lay the new one in there shut it and latch it back...
look where the hood release latch is (left of the steering wheel, below dash) just above that is a square section on the lower part of the dash. It has a handle and can be pulled off quite easily. Your fuses are contained therin and attached to the backside of the peice you pulled off will be a fuse puller, extra fuses and a fuse diagram.

The latch is attached to linkages... you have to grab those linkages and pull them in the direction that the latch would've pulled them (usually inward).
Usually a quick adjustment of the latch mounting bolts does the trick, or if it is just sticky, WD40 is good stuff. Also, make sure the release cable is retracting.
There should be a hood release lever in the kick panel down on the far right side, once pulled you'll need to release the outside safety latch
