There are several partitioning software packages available. I have used "partition magic", but that is not necessarily an endorsment, since it's an older application and I'm not sure it works on the newer drives.

Using "Disk Management" included in Windows you may add, remove or split partitions and decrease or increase free space to existing ones.

To do this, you would have to use a backup tool to save your files in another place.

How do you know if a hard drive is 40 GB or 80 GB?

If you have harddisk in hand outside of a computer you can read the model details and specifications printed on the harddisk. If it is inside a computer and you are running the computer with a Windows operating system, you can use File Explorer or My Computer icon to see the harddisk details. If it is a C: drive you can also right click and see properties which will show you total size, used and free space (this size is based on partition information of the drive and is it has more than one partitions or have space that has not been used in the logical drive partition it may show less size compared to the actual physical capacity of the HDD. For more details in a Windows XP machine you can also go to Start-> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management This will give you all the details you need to know about the harddisk drives installed in the computer. - Neeraj Sharma

How do you format windows vista when an error keep coming up that keeps saying can not format this volume of windows you are using this operating system?

You cannot format the drive / partition that Windows Vista is currently running on while it is running. You will need to boot from either a partition utility disc, such as GParted, or the install disc of the operating system you want to install, and format the drive from there.

How do you remove a partition on a hard drive running Windows 98 without reformatting the hard disk?

On a Windows 98 system, there is very likely to only be one partition on the disk. The difference between formatting the disk and deleting the partition would thus be a matter of semantics. Either way, all the data on the hard drive would be gone.

How do you access the C drive from a Linux terminal?

Linux does not identify drives or partitions with letters. To Windows, "C:" is the partition that the running version of Windows is currently installed on, regardless of how many partitions are on the disk. Linux identifies partitions based on the order they are placed on the disk. For instance, the second partition on the first hard drive would be /dev/sda2 or /dev/hda2. In order to access a Windows partition, you will need to identify what partition it is actually on. A quick way to do this is to run cfdisk /dev/sda or cfdisk with whatever hard drive it is on if you have more than one. A Windows partition will have the type of either NTFS or FAT32. To mount it, create a directory (such as /mnt/windows), and use the command mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/windows substituting of course the correct partition.

You have two running modes for your computer windows xp and windows 2000 how do you delete widows 2000?

The most trivial way of doing this is, to format the partition of the hard drive that has the windows 2000. However, all the data on that partition will be lost. Copy all the important documents onto a backup folder on some other patition and then continue with formatting.

How do you remove write protection from a partition running Windows that's missing the hal.dll file and the rest of the partitions are running Linux?

If you are talking about accessing the partition from Linux, the kernel file system driver does not allow writing to NTFS partitions. You can write to the partition in Linux if you install the NTFS-3G file system. This is the only form of "write-protection" that should be on your system.

Can you move your windows partition on your mac to an external hard drive?

You can certainly move Windows to an external hard drive but Windows will not boot directly from an external drive. If you are running Windows in Parallels (See links below) you can have Parallels installed on the Mac's drive and then have your Windows virtual machine on the external drive.
