There are many methods. The most commonly accepted in the medical field include lethal injection, gassing with carbon monoxide, and suffocating with a plastic bag. Apart from lethal injection, these methods are not even considered ethical to execute a convicted murderer in the United States. When a lethal injection is performed, the family is usually not allowed to watch because of its effects.
There are many methods of euthanization. Remember, the ultimate goal here is to end the person's life, so what we are looking for here is first, that the death does not fail, as this would add to the suffering of our target. Next, we want it to be quick, so that we, the doctors, don't have to deal with it any longer than necessary. Lastly this death should not hurt. We will take a good, hard, detailed look at the methods of this gruesome subject. (Warning: If you are easily disturbed, I recommend you do not continue reading) (For the purposes of this answer, euthanasia shall refer to doctor taking the final action that ends the patient's life with the patient's consent) We will not debate whether this is wrong or right at the moment, but right now, we have a job. Our job is to kill someone. Ready? Let's roll up our sleeves and get down to it. We take the lethal mixture of chemicals, the same mixture used for executing criminals, and put it into our injection apparatus, commonly in the form of an IV. Using this method, two needles are inserted into the patient, one in each arm. Once the tubes are in place, we administer an anesthetic, usually Sodium thiopental, or more commonly called Pentothal. Once the subject is unconscious, saline solution flushes the lines, and we introduce a paralyzing agent, usually Pavulon (Pancuronium Bromide). This is administered in a dosage so large (100 milligrams) that it actually stops the diaphragm and lungs, effectively beginning the process of death through suffocation. Our saline solution once again flushes the lines, and we put in our toxic agent… Potassium Chloride. This is given in order to interrupt the electrical signals that our hearts need to function, thereby inducing cardiac arrest. This is a very popular method since it can be performed with a variety of household items. We will be using a much more elaborate system. Our system has a hood into which we will pump an inert gas, such as nitrogen or more probably carbon dioxide. Placing this hood over the subject's head, we will simply turn on the gas, and, since we must monitor the process to make sure that it is completed, we will stand there and watch as our patient slowly stops breathing. These will be our principle means of euthanizing. Other methods exist and are implemented, but they are very dangerous and often end in failure. Euthanasia, just like suicide, is an irreversible step (unless it fails), so if you do live where it is legal, think long and hard and look into such pain-relieving things like morphine or Palliative medicine, as almost all pain can be relieved, if not eliminated.

Euthanasia is usually administered as a shot, it causes the animal to basically suffocate, but there's nothing they can do. It's inhumane.

This depends on whether you're talking about active euthanasia or passive euthanasia. In the case of the former, a drug is often ingested by or injected into a patient to induce death.

What type of certification do you need to be able to medicaly treat and euthanise animals?

It depends on the laws of the state. A degree in veterinary medicine is normally required to medically treat animals. ( Such as a Vet Tech) A euthanasia certificate is required for the sole purpose of performing the act of euthanasia. One example is a person who works at a shelter and it is their job to perform euthanasia on the sick injured or unwanted pets.

Are there any humane ways to have your cat euthanized at home?

Yes. There are mobile Veterinarians who will come to your home to perform the euthanasia. Also, many Veterinarians with "regular" practices (i.e, they have a physical clinic or hospital where they usually see patients) will consent to come to your home to perform the euthanasia. Oxycodone is not used in cats. And, GOOD GOD NO! it cannot be used for home "euthanasia", unless of course you consider poisoning your cat and waiting while its organs slowly shut down and die a respectful, painless, humane way to kill him or her.
