Immediate action refers to actions taken when a weapon fails to fire. For most, the immediate action is to slap the base of the magazine to insure it is fully seated, rack the slide and while holding to the rear rotate the pistol sharply to the right (to help eject any unfired, extracted cartridge) release the slide, check that the safety is OFF, and attempt to fire. This process is sometimes called slap, rack and roll.
