Everyone goes about picking a religion differently, but here is a way that seems to be pretty successful:
First, make a list of anything that you personally believe is true. Also include in the list things that a true religion would or would not have or believe in. (As you research, this list might change, but it works as a starting point).
Second, learn the basics of religions all across the spectrum. I mean everything, from Catholicism to Confucianism, Buddhism to Baptists, and Mormons to Muslims... everything! (Wikipedia has a great list of religions that can be found at the "Related Link" below, it will definitely help!) Always be open minded and willing to try something new.
For those religions that really catch your eye, research more. You might want to read their literature, visit their worship services, or meet with people who belong to that religion. Most religions are very excited to share their beliefs with others.
Let each religion speak for themselves. Don't ask someone who doesn't like Jews what Jews believe. Don't ask someone who left the Methodist church what Methodists teach. Learn from official sources and people who practice the religion you are researching, then put their doctrines to the test against your own common sense and personal beliefs - not others!
Now the most important step - PRAY! God will lead you to the right religion. Pray throughout the whole process, ask God if certain doctrines are true or if certain religions are true, He knows what is true and will lead you to it if you ask.
If you are open minded, working with God, and not giving up, you'll find the truth.
