How do you play poker in simple terms?

• Very simply using Texas holdem, you have 2 cards and the other players have 2 cards.
• Players take the best 5 available cards including the common cards and their 2 cards.
• 2 players are forced to put money in the blinds and there is a round of betting.
• 3 cards called the flop is dealt next, then a single card on the turn and another card on the river each with another betting round. So there are 4 betting rounds.
• There are 3 types of hands you can make: pair type hands, flushes, and straights.
• Pairs are two of the same value, 3 of a kind are 3 of the same value, 4 of a kind are 4 of the same value, and full houses are 3 of one value and 2 of another.
• Straights are 5 card values in a row(for example 45678)
• Flushes are 5 cards of the same suit(for example all spades)
• Straight flush beats 4 of a kind beats full house beats flush beats straight beats 3 of a kind beats pair beats no pair(usually named top card value high)

The 2 important things to think of in Poker are math and reading your opponent. So to play good poker you try to make your opponent make mistakes when possible and cause the math to be in your favor by thinking of odds.

To improve you have to think carefully about important hands you played. After looking at them try to find mistakes and remember to fix those mistakes when you are in a similar situation.
