Unfortunately you cannot play two player on the samecomputer.
It's easy to do if your both in the same house (on their own computers), all you have to do is in the options for single player just select "Open To Lan" and anyone in the house can then join in on your map. They just have to go to the "Multiplayer" menu to find it.
You have to have two separate computers and one of them has to run a server if they are not in the same house.
If your buddy across town want's to play then one of you (the one with the faster internet or bigger computer) has to download the server. Just go to the "minecraft WiKi" online and it will tell you everytihing you need to do. It's a lot easier then it used to be.
They have directions for the Mac, Windows, etc.

go on PlanetMinecraft.com and click servers, then copy the IP from the server, Open your minecraft, Then hit multiplayer, Finally hit "Add Server" and just put the IP in
