To open the hood on a 2001 Mercury Cougar when the hood latch cable snaps you will need to release the mechanism from the underside. You will need a mechanics prybar and look up from underneath the car, place the screwdriver tip in the release mechanism and turn.

Most cable plugs are held just by friction, but some types have a notch that a spring loaded contact in the receptacle catches on to lock the connector in place (e.g. phone plugs, miniphone plugs) once it is fully seated. But when you get to more advanced and modern specialty cables (e.g. RJ11 telephone, Ethernet) a spring loaded release latch is incorporated that snaps when the cable is inserted and completely prevents the cable from being accidentally removed. You need a flash light and maybe a dental mirror to see the attaching point on the latch itself. The rod slips into the hole at an angle then straighten it up and attach it to the door handle with the plastic clip, it snaps over the rod to hold it in place.

2000 Protege did not have a key-lock glove box. Pull the glove box release handle all the way open, then keep pulling it till it snaps off. Behind where the handle pivot point was is an opening to the inside of the latch mechanism. Stick a thin tool in the rectangular opening and push the latch bolt down to release the glove box. Once open, remove the 3 screws that attach the latch to the glove box, and head to your nearest junk-yard for a replacement latch.

I suspect you ran into the same challenge as I did. The hood release cable is either rusted or jammed or broken in its sleeve and the hood won't release. To get the hood open on an as needed basis until you can replace the faulty cable you can gain access as follows: 1. The grill is an entire single piece of plastic that is held in by snaps. There is one above and below each headlight on each side. All the other connectors are just guides and do not snap in place. 2. Grab the grill / headlight piece and pull it off from one side at a time starting with the top. Only pull it out about one inch. Then the bottom snap. Move to the far side and repeat. The entire grill will now fall out so hold on. Each headlight has about a foot of headlight wire attached. It is strong enough to hold the grill while hanging if you are working alone. 3. Now you can see the entire hood latch.. You will see where the release cable connects to the latch. Bending way down , look under the latch and you will see the inner release cable coming out of the shielded portion. With a pair of small vice grips grab that wire and give a smart direct tug. This will "pop" the latch. 4. Now you can use the traditional safety latch handle for the secondary closure. Do what you want to do and then simply reverse the process. When reversing be sure to put the bottom snap in first then the top one then move to the other side bottom then top. Be sure the other snapo guide holes are aligned before snapping in any of the snaps. They are all plastic. Hope this helps. I have been doing this fr a wekk now as I await the new cable. cheers

means it's time for a new hatch release or the cable is snapped and isn't pulling the latch open to release the hatch if you remove the panel in the hatchback where the retractor is you will probably find that its broken off of its bracket. there is a piece of plastic that holds that motor in place, and when it snaps, the hatch either wont shut or wont retract all the way

I used the Napa brand tool, #3355 which cost about $12.00. I will also needed a #50 Torx bit to remove the caliper assy. update- found Napa tool #3163 a better fit, matches the 3/4 inch cube description.. You will need a special tool (3/4 inch cube that snaps on to ratchet wrench) to turn in the pistons on the rear calipers.

Snaps are great because they won't get caught or jammed. The only problem with snaps is that they don't form a tigh enough seal for clothes.

Depending on where your cable snapped, you might try feeling around up in the general area of the latch and see if enough of the cable is hanging down far enough for you to pull on by hand to release it. When I bought my car, the hood release cable was broken and someone had tied a piece of something or other to the mechanism that you were supposed to pull on to get the thing to unlatch. Unfortunately, the first time I tried to do it, it came off in my hand. One friend of mine was able to stick his hand up there and pull on the latch by hand, but it's hard to do because it's impossible to see where it is from under the car and you have to feel around for it, and it's hard to get your hand into the right position to do it even if you do find the right place. So you'll probably end up doing what we did, which was to get up in there and actually unscrew the bolts that hold the whole hood latch mechanism to the body of the car. You can't really tell which bolts are holding the thing on there, and you'll probably take a few off that have nothing to do with the latch at all before you get it loosened enough to see what's going on and reach the latch. Anyway, once you get the dang thing open you can fasten something on the latch to pull on in the future, but make sure that whaever you use is strong enough to be pulled on without coming off or snapping, and that it's not hanging over a sharp edge that will sever it the first time you pull on it (speaking from personal experience). Use something like heavy duty baling wire. The good thing is that once you've got it functional, no one else will know how to open your hood and you don't have to worry about anyone else messing around with your engine or "borrowing" your battery.
