Add benzene, concentrated nitric acid and a small amount of concentarted sulfuric acid. Boil under reflux for 1 hour. Pour into cold water to neutralize the acid. Pour into a separating funnel. The organic layer (the product) will be on top. This should be washed and rinsed with a weak alakali and rinsed again. It may be optionally distilled to purify.

Add benzene, concentrated nitric acid and a drop or two of concentrated sulfuric acid to a flask with a reflux condenser. Reflux for about 2 hours. Cool and pour carefully into cold water to dilute the acid. The organic layer should be on top. Decant the organic layer and rinse with sodium bicarbonate and water to remove the acid. Dry over anhydrous calcium sulfate. The product is nitrobenzene.
