Most computer towers have a manual on/off switch located somewhere on the back, in addition to the usual power button on the front. Flipping this switch to the off position will stop that from happening. If your computer doesn't have one, I would recommend having it plugged into a power strip (which you should really do anyway), and when you're not using it, simply turn off the power strip which will cut the flow of electricity. It'll save energy too!
