I replaced both ball joints on my 1999 Jimmy passenger side. I am assuming their the same. The axle nut must be removed, I belive it is 32 mm. I had to remove the upper to allow travel to remove the spline from the wheel bearing. Also the lower has a weird design in which the top of the ball joint is covered by the control arm, there was no hole in it to allow me to beat it out, so I made with drill bit. Maybe rent a press kit from an auto store, and get the torque spec for the axle nut. Oh yea, the shaft stays put, don't remove it just tye it up and try to keep it in the casement. Hope that helps.

On the extended version there will also be a U joint in the middle. So if you look under the car and the drive shaft just looks like one long tube you have a two joint shaft. If however, you see what appears to be a joint about the size of both of your fists together in the middle of the shaft, you are looking at the third joint.
