∙ 10y agoDFU mode, which stands for "Device Firmware Update," is when you have a black screen on the display of the iPhone, but the unit is still on, in a "recovery mode" that enables the erasure of both the user and system profiles on the phone. It is the only way to restore a device that has been disabled due to entering a passcode incorrectly too many times.
When plugged into a computer with iTunes open, hold down both the top (sleep/wake) and bottom-middle (home) buttons until the phone disappears from iTunes. Continue holding both buttons for about 6-8 seconds, then let go of the top (sleep/wake) button. Keep holding the home button. iTunes should pop up with a message saying that "iTunes has detected a device in recovery mode. You must restore this phone in order to use it with iTunes." Click on the "restore iPhone" button and "restore and update" to start this process. You must be connected to the internet for the process to finish successfully. It generally takes about 8-15 minutes to finish.
