The Mac OS X Quick Look feature allows the user to preview a file by selecting it's icon with a single click and pressing the Space bar. Pressing the Space bar again will end the preview or, in common with many Mac OS X features, pressing the Escape key (esc in the top left corner of the keyboard) will also end a Quick Look preview.
On Mac Mail the quick look is what you see when you click on any email in your inbox. Double click the email to see it full screen.

All the Safari windows close and memory that was used by Safari is returned to availability. Closing a window does not quit Safari. Command Q or Menu item "Quit Safari" will actually quit the application.
Press "Command+Q" to quit applications. You can also use the menu under "Photo Booth"=>Quit Photo Booth" As a last resort you can Force Quit by pressing "Option+Command+ESC" and select and verify what you want to quit.
