1. Take it to a gunsmith
2. Less expensive, but also lower quality- you can do it yourself. Companies like Birchwood-Casey make a DIY Cold Blue kit. Cold blue is not as dark, nor as durable as a professional hot blue job, but it is much safer to try at home.
I see no reason why not. You may need to experiment around to find the best formula for that particular steel.
Not unless you do it poorly. It's not a collectable firearm, so it's value is in it's utility, not it's originality.
slow rust bluing, best done by a pro...Get a copy of 'shotgun news' at a major book store for gunsmiths that do that type of bluing...LC Smith shotguns are collectible...
Surely there are more markings on the gun. I can find a similar number on a Western Field (Montgomery Wards) double barrel shotgun which makes me suspect that it is Stevens/Savage 311 re-branded for Wards. This model designation was used after 1948.
2013 if Obama is re-elected
Hi, I bought a Stevens single shot 20 guage shotgun in 1983. It was brand new as far as I knew, and I bought it from Gibson's Discount Center in Odessa,Tx. I locked my keys in my car a couple of years later and exchanged the shotgun for a key. I sure wished I would'nt have done that! Oh, by the way I only paid $50 for the gun. I put it on layaway and paid it off in 5 weeks. * Joshua Stevens stopped in 1886, but the company continued until 1916. Then, in 1920 Savage Arms purchased the name and manufacturing facilities and produced J. Stevens firearms until 1948. After 1948 the initial was dropped and the guns were marked "Stevens-Savage" or "Stevens Arms Co" until 1991 when the line was discontinued. In 1999 the name was re-introduced, but only on the Favorite rifle. No Stevens shotguns are currently being produced.

If you have to ask how to put a shotgun back together you shouldn't be touching it! Dont touch some thing that will kill you if you get it wrong.
