Open the hood. When facing the engine, there is a small oval shaped reservoir with a black round cap on it. It is located on the back wall of the engine compartment to your right. Remove the cap. Make sure to clean the cap off with some type of cleaner or degreaser before you replace the cap. The brake fluid level should be to the edge of the reservoir, BELOW the line of where the cap fits. NOT to the top of the cap. Fill ONLY with DOT-3 brake fluid, found at any local auto parts store.
Between the brake fluid reservoir and the firewall
In a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport : You check the brake fluid LEVEL in the brake fluid reservoir in the engine compartment . It is on the drivers side of the vehicle , near the firewall ( that's the metal wall that divides the engine compartment from the passenger compartment ) It is a plastic reservoir that allows you to check the brake fluid level just by looking ( you only need to remove the cap if the brake fluid level is not up to the full mark and you are going to add the DOT 3 brake fluid that is required
It is important to maintain the brake fluid levels in a car. The brake fluid type for a 2002 Grand AM is DOT 3 brake fluid.

Starting with the 2002 Ford Explorer ( 4 door ) there isn't an automatic transmission fluid dipstick that allows you to refill the transmission . The Ford dealer has a way of checking the transmission fluid level from underneath the vehicle , I couldn't find anything in the 2002 Ford Explorer maintenance schedule so I would ask a Ford dealer . I know that on my 1995 Ford Explorer I've had the dealer use a machine a couple of times that pumps in new transmission fluid through the transmission cooler lines as the old fluid is pumped out
Motorcraft MERCON - V - automatic transmission fluid ( note : the 2002 Ford Explorer 4 door does not have an automatic transmission fluid level dipstick )
A 2002 Kia Rio takes the brake fluid known as DOT3. It is the standard type of fluid used in cars with power brakes.
most people never flush their brake fluid. manufacturers have service intervals anywhere from 2 to 5 years for brake fluid.
