i took the part back to autozone - it must have been made wrong and they only keep 1 in stock. went to advanced auto parts and theirs fit with no effort.

Installation, Install the camshaft position sensor into the distributor. Align the sensor into the notch on the distributor housing, connect the wiring harness, reinstall the rotor, reinstall the distributor cap. Tighten the mounting screws, reinstall the air cleaner.
