The basics are pretty logical:
Since the fuel pump is inside the gas tank, the "Related Questions" below offer much information and first-hand experience on dropping the gas tank.
Since the fuel pump is inside the gas tank, the instructions for replacing a fuel pump also covers the removal of the tank.
Draining: no drain plug on the tank means you'll be using a siphon hose or a small hand pump to drain the gas out.
Tips:See "Related Questions" below for more
There are 4 bolts around the tank you need to take off then there is a stabilizer at the front center that needs to be taken off too. Then there is the fuel inlet and breather at top rear for filling up the tank held on by hose clamps. that will drop the tank. But if you need to get to the fuel pump an hoses you can take out the back seat and on the floor boar there is a door unscrew it and you can get to the pump to replace it...
Access door?I've never heard of a Taurus/Sable having a fuel pump access door/panel - it may have been a limited model year design.See "Related Questions" below for more about fuel tanks and pumps
You will have to drop the fuel tank and get the part (9b190) from ford. It is labeled on how to remove it. I am in the process of doing this myself.
Drop the fuel tank.
Yes!That is the most reasonable approach to alternator replacement on this generation of Taurus / Sable DOHC vehicles. (some months later...)"Reasonable"?? What was I thinking??It's the ONLY way to get it out! (doofus)

Yes.
Yes. However the motors and transmissions need to be the same. Mercury Sables and Ford Tauruses share the same powerplant. So, if you have a 3.0L OHV V6 12V Vulcan motor then any Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable with the 3.0L OHV V6 12V Vulcan motor can supply you with a transmission. However, if you have a 3.0L DOHC V6 24V Duratec motor, you MUST use a transmission from a Duratec motor. There are also 2 different transmissions, the AX4S and the AX4N. They are not directly interchangeable, and would require a full PCM change as well as axleshafts. The best choice would be to select a vehicle with the same motor and transmission for a trouble free drop in replacement, but it can come from either a Sable or Taurus without any issues.
The only way to drain the gas tank is to use up the fuel, and then drop the tank and remove the rest by hand (by pulling the fuel pump) the 1996 and newer Taurus's feature an Anti-Siphon valve that prevents the tank from being siphoned.
There is a way to drop the pan without dropping the y-pipe. The instructions and pictures are here and it does work because I did it. http://www.taurusclub.com/forum/82-maintenance-repair/163572-raise-engine-remove-y-pipe.html
I believe it's on top of the fuel tank. You need to drop the tank to get to the pump.
It is located on top and inside the fuel tank. You must drop the tank to replace it.
