The ON/OFF switch for the cruise control on my '99 Explorer broke away from it's 2 mounts underneath the horn/airbag cover in the center of the steering wheel. To repair, I had to remove the airbag. These are the steps I took: 1. Remove BOTH battery cables, positive and negative, and wait 10 minutes. 2. Pry away the two covers on the side of the steering wheel column. You wil need a sharp edge to get between the top of the cover/plug and the steering column. A small pocket knife blade should be sharp enough and strong enough to pry away the covers. 3. Remove the bolts under the two covers. There is one bolt on each side of the steering column. I used a 5/16 socket to screw the bolts out of the side of the airbag. 4. Once the bolts are removed you can easily lift the airbag out of its pocket. There are two wires attached to the airbag. To affect my repair, I did not have to disconnect these wires. The wires were long enough to allow me to lift the airbag out of the way and set it on the bottom of the steering wheel. 5. Once I had access to the two screws, I removed the screws and carefully lifted the broken pieces of plastic out of their holes. The top screw also has a grounding wire attached. I put the screws back into their holes with the grounding wire in place so as not to lose any parts. I popped the wire connecter away from the ON/OFF switch. 6 Next I carefully super-glued the two broken pieces of plastic back into place on the ON/OFF switch. Next I cut a paperclip into two pieces and fit the curved ends around the extension on the plastic pieces that I just super-glued back onto the switch. The extensions I am refering to fit down into their monting holes on the steering column. I bent the paperclips so that they extended across the prior break, so that they will provide support to the bottom side of the mounting plastic to keep it from breaking again. I super-glued the paperclips into place, let it all dry, then remounted it on the steering column by reversing all steps.
