On the 2000 the knob is on a spline on the shift lever. You'll either have to cut it off, or if you want to reuse it take out the lever by unscrewing the nut under the shaft, place the shaft in a vise and pound off the knob with a soft hammer.

There is a clip on the front of the knob. Pry it out with a screwdriver.

look at your shift knob for mine(1997) just take to gear 2 and look u will see a litle metal clip .. take a screwdriver and get it out .. and than just get out your shift knob :P
To remove the gear shift knob on the SLK 320, first pry the cover from the gear shift knob. Then, use a screwdriver to remove the screw in the center of the knob. This will then allow the knob to be removed.

under the knob, there should be a locking nut on the shift rod. Loosen this and the knob should just unscrew
