How do you remove a radio from a 1996-2005 Ford Taurus - Mercury Sable?

The "radio" in 1996-2005 Taurus/Sables is actually 2 parts:
- The dash controls - integrated into the dash panel with the climate / heater controls.
- Tuner & optional cd-changer main body of the system is in the trunk.
This means that a converter* will be required for the dash and wiring harness run from the trunk to the dash.
* No one here, including me, have found a dash converter for car equipped with electronic heater controls. That search goes on...
