on 2003 taurus,you must remove sub frame.time consuming,but necessary
yes you do.
A 1997 Lincoln Continental will use Mercon transmission fluid- AX4N Transmission
The ax4s and ax4n transaxles are not interchangable. The computers are completely different, the axles are different, everything is different on both! I learned the hard way !!!
Yes I can help you, Go to Transtar Industries.com ,click on view catalog,in lefthand payne select 2008 at catalog then look for ford then select that, scroll down to ax4n/4f50n select that one and agree to down ax4n catalog in PDF format and then you will see all of your internals of that transmission!
There is NO "Reservoir" for a AX4N, Automatic Transmission. There is an oil pan and a torque converter which is between the engine and the transmission where it bolts to the engine.
Yes,you can
My 1995 Mercury Sable with 3.0L has that trany in it. So I'd say yes
The 1998 Ford Taurus Owner Guide shows : Motorcraft MERCON - V , automatic transmission fluid For the AX4N and AX4S automatic transaxles
(This answer Covers the "Generation 3" 1996-1999 Series Ford Motor Company Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable.)This answer differentiates depending on the transmission and the engine equipped. Normally the 1998+ year model Taurus/Sables had the AX4N Transaxle, whereas the 1996-1997 models had the AX4S. However due to transmission replacements and "one-off's" at the factory, many 1996+ Model tauri were shipped with the AX4N transaxle and some 1998+ models had the AX4S.To determine which transmission you have its as easy as climbing under the car and counting the bolts on the transmission pan. You can tell because this will be the largest pan on the vehicle. The AXOD-E (AX4S) has 17 Bolts. the AX4N has 19 Bolts.Another way to tell is some pans may have AXOD METRIC or AX4N METRIC stamped on it. If it says AXOD METRIC you have the AX4S. (the AX4S used many parts from the AXOD transmission and they are brothers in design however the AX4S is electronic controlled and features some improvements over the AXOD.) If your Pan says AX4N you obviously Have the AX4N.ApplicationVolumeAX4S (Vulcan)12.20 QTS. ( 11.5L )AX4N (Vulcan)13.50 QTS. ( 12.8L )AX4N (Duratec)13.40 QTS. ( 12.7L )AX4N (SHO)13.40 QTS. ( 12.7L )Remember to check the fluid regularly, as well as when you are filling the transmission.DO NOT OVERFILL.ONLY USE FORD MERCON V FLUID IN THESE TRANSMISSIONS. USE OF OTHER FLUIDS WILL DAMAGE THE TRANSMISSIONS.MERCON fluid has been superseded by the MERCON V fluid specification. For more information, see the included links.
'98 - '00 should be the same transmission, so yes.(Provided the wheel size is the same for both vehicles, and the letter codes match [i.e. AX4N or AX0D])
The shifting in the AXOD is done with fluid accumulators. Fluid fills the accumulator and pushes on a piston until it bottoms out. During that time, the clutches are applying slowly. In and AXODE or the AX4N, they eliminate the accumulators and use electric solenoids that regulate pressure to the clutch pistons. These transmissions are NOT interchangeable.
The 1995 Mercury Sable has two different available transmissions. The fill capacities depend on the transmission type. Transmission code AX4S has a specified fill of 12.3-quarts(qts). The AX4N fill is 13.5-qts.
