I would start by purchasing a repair manual-like Haynes or Chilton- these are available at most parts stores. Descriptions are sometimes a lttle too brief but pictures tell you what bolts etc. to look at. Right now I'm considering the same thing on a 95 escort. I already replaced the ignition cylinder switch and the manual was a big help. Better yet has a great deal of repair info and is more specific to the job at hand.

The 1995 Ford escort 1.9 liter engine starter is located on the left-hand side of the engine, near the front. Remove the cables from the starter. Remove the retaining bolts from the starter. Reverse the process to install the new starter.

In general, remove negative cable from battery, remove electrical wires from starter, remove bolts holding starter in place, remove starter. Replace starter in reverse order.
