This describes replacing the disk brake pads on a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with 4-wheel anti-lock brakes. After you raise the truck and have the wheels off, pull the 2 caliper bolts on the back side that hold the caliper on. These bolts take a 13mm socket on the front calipers and a 10mm socket on the rear calipers. Notice that there are tabs locking the caliper under the mounting bracket, so work those free from under the bracket and the lift the caliper straight off the mounting bracket. If the calipers come off hard, tap them back and forth to get the pistons to ease off some pressure - that will help. Make sure to hang the caliper from a bungy cord or something to hold it up, so no pressure is on the brake fluid line. Once the caliper is off, you will see that the brake pads are held into the mounting bracket by tabs at each end. There are also metal holding plates to help secure them into the bracket. The pads slide straight out of the bracket. Once the pads are out, replacing them and reassembly is the exact reverse of disassembly. If you replace the pads, be sure to use the little packets of brake pad lubrication to on the BACK sides of the pads. This will eliminate noise when the brakes are applied. These little packets are available from the auto parts store that sold you the brake pads. Before reinstalling the caliper, you must retract the piston on the back side of the caliper. This will force brake fluid back through the lines, so loosen the master cylinder cap first. Now use some brake cleaner and clean off the boot, so contaminents don't get into the fluid system. Now take an old brake pad, put it against the piston, and use a C-clamp against the old pad the the back of the caliper to compress the piston back in. Once compressed, remove the C-clamp and the old pad and slide the caliper back into place on the bracket. Torque the caliper bolts hand-tight with a 3/8" rachet - about 16-18 foot pounds. Make sure the caliper bolts have a slight dab of grease, so they don't sieze over time. When you are done, remember to check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder and tighten the cap. The pistons need to reseat themselves, so the brake pedal will be very low at first. After starting the truck, pump the brake pedal a couple of times and it will return to normal.
