You have to take the all of the rings off the inside of the head attached to the shaft off. basically disassemble the entire existing head piece by piece on the inside of the head. Major pain in the butt, and good luck finding a head that will work. Ive tried everything from taking the gear housing and getting another gear that holds the head on to fit so I didnt have to use the crappy head troy bilt gives you. Oh well good luck, you need it.

Hold metal portion of head and turn black middle section counter clockwise with chanelocks or pump pliers.

Looking between the gear box assembly (metal housing) and the top of the trimmer head, locate a u-shaped slot found on either side of the gear box assembly. If you rotate the trimmer head slowly while looking into that slot you will see a mating u-shaped cutout. Place a screwdriver, Allen wrench or anything that will prevent the internal mechanics from rotating. Now turn the trimmer head counterclockwise and it will unscrew from the gear box shaft.
