In line on the heater hoses on the passenger side of the engine. Has a small vacuum line to it and both heater hoses go through it. The heater hoses are smaller than the radiator hoses and go through the firwall.
If you have not done this before, it is a very time consuming job. Replacing the heater core is not the problem. Getting to it is. Unless you are willing to start removing panels and know how to remove them without damaging the plastic panels and clips, I suggest you take it to a professional. It is just a matter of removing enough to actually get to the core. Once you get to the heater core, first drain the radiator enough to get the level below the heater hoses. Remove the heater hoses, and then remove and replace the core.

To bypass the heater core you need to remove the two water hoses going through the firewall from the engine compartment to the heater core and connect them together so that the water loops around back to the engine.

Simple, take the inlet and outlet hoses going to and from the heater core and connect them together.
Basically behind and below the glove compartment , you can see where the heater hoses connect to the heater core at the firewall from the engine compartment

"Make sure the engine is NOT at operating temperature (in other words, thoroughly cool) ... The heater case cover screw nearest the firewall will be difficult to see, but is the secret to removing the heater core without lengthy and complex disassembly procedures ... Use a long? in.-drive extension to access and remove this screw. Carefully remove the heater case cover from the vehicle. ... Pinch off the heater hoses using the proper smooth-jawed clamps. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core tubes at the firewall. Be prepared to catch the coolant for proper disposal. ... Remove the screws attaching the heater core to the heater case and remove the heater core."
