Drain and remove the fuel tank. Remove the lock ring that holds the fuel pump in the tank. Remove nd replavce fuel pump. Re-assemble.
You have to drop the gas tank in order to access the fuel pump. Once the tank it out you remove the lock ring that holds the pump and sending unit in. remove and then replace the pump and sending unit replace the gasket and lock ring and then reinstall the gas tank.
Remove all the gas in the tank. Put the vehicle on a lift. Support the tank and remove two straps. Remove the filler hose from the tank. Slowly drop the tank until you can access the top. Remove the plastic lock on the wiring harness. Remove the wiring harness. Remove the pump outlet line and the gas return line. Mark them so you won't get confused. Drop the tank to the floor. Remove the lock ring lock. Using a spanner or 6 inch channel-lock pliers, rotate the lock ring counter-clockwise. Impart a downward pressure as the fuel pump is spring loaded. Pull up on the pump and remove. Replace with new gaskets and lock ring lock.
The fuel pump on a mercury cougar is in the fuel tank. You are going to have to remove the fuel tank, take the lock ring off of the tank, and then pull the pump assembly out.

the fuel pump is inside the fuel tank. drop the tank then remove the round lock ring on the top of the tank and pull it out. just watch the edge of the hole. IT'S SHARP!!

you need to drop the fuel tank,since this is where the pump is. once the tank is down you can see the lock ring. remove and remove pump. be sure to replace strainer too.
Drain and remove the fuel tank. The fuel pump is inside the tank. Once you get the fuel tank out, you replace the fuel pump by removing the large lock ring in the middle of the tank. It unscrews counterclockwise. Once you get that far, the rest is self-explanitory.
Empty gas tank, remove tank straps, lower tank, disconnect hoses and electrical connectors, rotate lock ring, lift unit out
You release the pressure from the tank. Next you remove the tank. There is a lock ring that secures the pump assembly. The best thing to do is to replace the fuel pump module.
Remove fuel tank. Use a brass punch to drive fuel pump lock ring counterclockwise. Remove pump and O-ring. Check inlet sock filter for damage or contamination, replace if required. Clean sealing area of tank and use a new O-ring when installing.
