there are 3 screws that hold the console up. one screw in the very front and there are 2 screws inside of the dome light which are accessed by removing the clear cover on the dome light

To get to the ashtray bulb on a 1997 Z71, the console top needs to be removed. First remove the ashtray from its holder. Then, remove the clips on the sides holding the console top on.

You have to remove the console cover. This starts with two screws in the console storage tray.
If it anything Like a 1997 silverado extended cab there is one Phillips head screw towards the front of the console(you should be able to see where one would be, take it out, oddly enough it just has one if its like the extended cabs, the rear of the console there are 2 tabs and you should be able to slide the console forward, there is a orange and black wire that have a connection its pretty stubborn but that should be all the holds it, these instructions are for extended cabs

According to the owners manual there are 2 switches ( for left and right flip out windows ) in the front overhead console that have the word VENT on them
If it's similar to the 1995, you just open the console container, take out the inside bag and look for two bolts directly below. Just remove them and slide the console out toward the back seat. There's a clip that holds it down in the front that's part of the shifter.
It's on the tunnel housing at the end of the console. Take the console out to get to it. Once you've found it disconnect the elctrical connection and remove it. Installation is the opposite of the removal.
