The button is held captive by tension within the assembly. Assuming the button is still attached to the mirror assembly, insert a small flat blade screwdriver or other prying device into the 'wider' end and twist with moderate force. The button wil slide out the broad (wide) end of the assembly when enough force is applied to 'lift' it far enough to clear the indention is (the button) lies in. Use no more force than necessary. I used a small screwdriver with a 1/8th inch shaft and a 3/16ths flared blade.
