* Remove the shift lever knob,console and shift boot * Disconnect the shift and select cables from the shift control assembly * Remove the large shift cable retainer plate and detach the cables from their bracket on the shift control assembly base * Remove the shift control assembly retaining nuts and remove the shift control assembly

Check the shift cableS, and the shift bushings. Broken cables or worn bushings can result in shifting problems.Good luck, and hope that it isn't a transmission problem.
First remove the shift knob pattern (it can be pried out with a small screw driver). Next remove the alignment pin with a pair of pliers. Then the shift knob can be unscrewed.
pull the shift boot down. loosen the jam nut under the shift knob then unscrew the shift knob.

remove shift knob remove shift boot at the base of shift lever, there is a metal ring, push down, and turn it to the left. -there is a special tool to do this, but two flat head screw drivers work
On top of the trans close to the firewall and engine block. Look where the shift cables (manual trans) come out of the firewall.
its not screwed in. Just pull it out as hard as you can.
Try twisting it and then get a manual for it. Try Chiltons or Haynes.
