mopar 361, 383, 413, 426, 440, or the 426 hemi.
How can you identify a mopar 727 big block transmission? I dealt with this with my 1965 Chrysler w/ 383 V-8. At least for my car, the big block version is stamped "727 BB" and the case is longer. I recall 35"L from front of case to end of the aluminum (not rubber driveshaft seal). Everything looked good on the rebuilt transmission, but when I unwrapped it to install I found the speedometer hole was too big and it didn't have the cable shift input. Under the gun with a moving truck coming, I had mine rebuilt locally, which didn't fix the "morning sickness" problem (fluid draining back from torque converter?). I since found that 1965 was the year Mopars converted from pushbutton to column shift but retained the cable shift of the pushbutton (1965 only). If I ever have to replace my case, I am guessing an earlier big-block transmission would work if I can't find a 1965.
no, just the tail shaft housing.
My old shop manuals answered my own question. No drain plug. "remove oil pan" not simple, not fun, but oh well...
If it is an automatic it will be a 727.
no you cant as I have found out the re stands to electronic shift that the 727 does not have
any year 727 should bolt to the 401 as the bolt pattern is the same on all 727's.
A Torqueflite 727 or 904
A while ago I ordered a transmission to replace the dying (later dead) one in my 1989 B250 van. I ordered the 727 assuming a big rig like that with a 318 would have the beefier transmission. My mistake, we had a van with a 904. The 727 is 4 inches longer than the 904, has a different size torque converter, and a different sized rear spline. a few bits of linkage is different. Now we have to go out and find a shorter drive shaft that properly connects to our new 727 and a new flex plate that fits the 727's torque converter size. We will probably have to modify some linkage as well. So I'd make sure to get the right transmission if you want an easy swap.
NO
the 727 should bolt up to the 340. A 727 transmission from a slant 6 will not bolt up to a 340. Find one off of a 273,318, 340 or 360.
