The first step to remove the seat of you Honda Steed 400 vlx is to remove the fuel tank. The fender struts have a tab the fits to a bracket on the seat. There are bolts and screws on each side that can the removed and you can lift off the seat back first then slide the tab out from the front. You may need to unloosen the fender stuts to allow for some wiggle rom with the tabs or alignment. The Struts are 12mm. If it is bolted in from the back of the rack. Remove the rear cover.

First remove the battery from the vehicle. then remove the two 10mm bolts on the top side of the battery tray and the one on the bottom side and remove it. remove the positive wires from the starter. the nut is a 12mm. there are two 12mm bolts that hold the starter bracket to the top of the transmission. remove them. if it is a manual trnsmission, remove the two 12mm nuts hold the clutch cable in place. this is so the bracket on the starter will clear the cable with ease. then remove the two 14mm bolts holding the starter in place.

Undo the 12mm nut from under the speaker in the boot.

Start with the bottom seat cushion of the rear seat Lift the front of the cushion, it will pop free. Once the front of the cushion is free, slide the cushion forward and remove it from the car. After the bottom cushion is removed, you can remove the two 12mm bolts securing the backrest. After removing the two 12mm bolts, slide the backrest up to unlock it and remove it from the car.
you gotta take off the interior piece on the ends of the backrest. at the bottom you'll find a 12mm bolt holding it on. you might have to take off the rear panel as well. 3 bolts on top, two on the bottom. use a spring compressor to remove the spring. you can rent one for free at some parts stores. get a haynes or chiltons!
12mm is nearly 1/2 an inch. A 13mm socket will remove a 1/2" bolt.
