Remove the rear passenger seat. Use the key to unlock the catch, lift the front slightly and pull forward to disengage the rear hook. Remove the driver seat. Undo the rear bolts either side of rear of seat, lift slightly and pull back to disengage front hooks. The battery is towards the front beneath two fuel lines that run from the main to the subsiduary tank and form an inverted V. Ease the battery cover out from under the lines. The battery is held into the battery case with an elasticated strap that hooks front and rear. It is easiest to unhook the rear one first. Ease the terminal covers back down the wires to expose the terminals. Disconnect the terminal, negative first. At this point it is easiest to have two people, one either side of the bike. Person 1 gently eases the fuel lines and wires apart. Person 2 can then lift the battery out of the case through the gap created. Lift out a little way first and diconnect the vent hose on the right of the battery before removing fully otherwise you will have to rethread the vent hose through the frame later. When replacing the battery note that the battery case has a groove to accommodate the vent hose. Take care to get the hose in the right place or the battery will get stuck halfway and you'll have to take it out and start again. If the battery doesn't go in easily double check you haven't trapped the vent hose or pinched one of the fuel lines. After installing double check the fuel hoses aren't pinched or have had the connections strained that could cause a leak. Reconnecting the terminals, replacing the strap, cover and seats is as above in reverse.

The Yamaha Virago 535 has a circular window on the front left side of the crankcase, immediately behind the shift linkage. The bike needs to be held upright (second person) and then the use of a flashlight helps see the level in the window. Level should be approximately center of the window.

Where is the starter relay on a Yamaha 700 virago?

I'm not sure about the Virago 700, but on the 535 it's under the right side-cover, under the seat, clinging to the side of the under-seat gas tank. If in doubt, follow the thick positive wire from your battery, it goes straight into the relay.
