To remove the brake calipers on a 2004 Mercury Monterey, start by safely lifting the vehicle and removing the wheel. Next, locate the caliper bolts on the back of the caliper and use a socket wrench to remove them. Once the bolts are removed, carefully slide the caliper off the brake rotor, and support it to avoid straining the brake line. Finally, if necessary, disconnect the brake line from the caliper for complete removal.
Lift the car, remove the tire, remove the brake shoe/caliper, and remove the old brake pads. Put in the new brake pads, replace the brake shoe/caliper, replace the tire, and lower the car.

Remove the 2 brake caliper pin bolts. Remove the park brake cable from the caliper. 6. Remove the brake caliper from the brake caliper bracket.

Many Ford and Mercury models have 'Torx' or 'star-bit' type bolts which you will need a special socket (or screwdriver, if you're a gorilla) to remove. These are available from automotive stores, or Seers-type department stores. Also, a C-clamp is handy to push the piston back into the caliper (so you can fit the caliper and new brake pad assembly back on to the rotor). A good socket set and a set of screwdrivers are also required.
remove the wheel, remove the brake caliper, the rotor should come right off. If the caliper has never been removed, there may be a keeper holding it in place. This retainer looks like a star lock washer and should be carefully removed so that it can be reused.
