Remove the clutch adjuster plate, remove the [lefthand] clutch nut and pull the entire clutch from the mainshaft. If it doesn't come easily you may need to use a puller, which can be purchased or made at home.

'87 Softails use a tapered mainshaft that has a woodruff key, so careful reassembly is critical.
