me and a friend recently encountered this while changing the water pump in my 98 outback legacy wagon and the way to remove it is to remove the belts then remove the bolt from the wheel and this will take two people one to hold the gear still under the car, and another to turn the ratchet with a cheater bar, after you remove the bolt just rock it forward and should come off with limited trouble. DO NOT buy a wheel puller it is hard to track down the right one and it is completely unnesseccery. I hope that helps.

It's a big job. You have to remove alternator and air cond. belts. Remove crankshaft pulley, then remove timing belt assembly cover, then remove timing belt, then pull out crank sprocket. After that you get the old crankshaft seal out and put in new one. Put then everything back in reverse order. Done.
