Have just finished replacing the original radio/tape deck and dash speakers in my 1990 corolla hatch with modern upgrades. The only way to get to the speakers is to remove the under-dash coverings. This is the first time I have ever attempted such a task so if I can, anyone can. All I used was a medium philips (X head) screw driver:

  • The left dash speaker is hidden behind the left side of the glove box so you will will need to 'drop it down' (pry in both the side-stoppers) in order to get to the screw directly behind. The other 2 screws are simply to the left and right of the glove box at the front/bottom of the under dash. Remove the 3 screws and the bottom part of the dash will simply hang down to allow easy access to the left speaker
  • To get to the right dash speaker you simply look for the screws holding the dash under the steering wheel. There is one clip on the right upper part of this so don't be afraid to pull it out. Again as with the left, once the screws have been removed it will simply hang down to allow easy access to the right speaker.

Remember, it is just a matter of A) removing all visible screws and then B) pulling out clips. Therefore, if it is still being held tight after removing all the visible screws, then there is sure to be a clip somewhere.
