It is likely that some of the 'gunk' to which you refer is tartar or calculus. This needs to be effectively removed by a licensed dental hygienist with specialized instruments that are not safe for untrained hands. There may also be residual cement that was used to adhere the brackets to the teeth. This too must be removed with special intruments. Failure to safely remove these accretions can lead to tooth decay, severe gum disease, and it can also ruin the goals of the ortho treatment. See your dentist.

It all depends on you! if your goth or punk or emo they look awesome but if you not it may clash with alot of the stuff you wear. and if you're really pale it may look like you have black gunk stuck in your teeth.
