For a USB drive (aka Flash Drive), unplug the device.
If you want to be more careful about it, make sure your operating system (or the computer) is not using the device.
The simplest way to ensure this is to shut down the computer.
Another way to do this: wait until the device is not being "read from" or "written to" (close windows that are open that refer to the device) and then try to "eject" the device. Depending on your system, you usually right click (or click-hold) on the icon representing your drive in the task tray. Then you select "unplug" or "eject" and wait until the device disappears from the tray.
Then unplug the device (as above).

∙ 11y agoClose all files that you opened on the USB stick. Look at the bottom right hand corner of your computer screen you will see a small green arrow. Click on the arrow and click safely remove USB drive from the pop-up box. After that, you will usually see a message that the USB drive is now safe to remove.
