Volkswagen does not make a diesel version of the Passat wagon for sale in the United States. They have made a Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion Diesel that is or soon will be available in Europe only, however that is not a wagon.
I think you have to remove the front bumper to get full control to the bulb.

To get the tail light out of the 1985 Toyota Cressida wagon, you will need to access the light from the inside of the trunk. Remove all trim from around the light and across the trunk latch. Then, remove the screws that hold the light and lens in place. You can then pull the light into the trunk.
