The shift knob on the automatic transmission is held on by a clip that is similar to the shape of a staple. On the side of the knob facing the radio, there is a small slot in which you pull the clip straight out. Then the knob will pull straight up without twisting because of a slot on the shifter. Mine was broken in three places below the clip which raised the shift knob while pressing the safety button, making it difficult to shift from park or reverse. If you are asking about the manual transmission shift knob, then I am not familiar with it's mount.
on the manual shifter grab twist either direction and pull up it will work its way off just dont position your face over it or you may end up with a black eye like my kid brother. Fenn
