I have the same issue - Found a picture of a replacement taillight assembly and the assembly is held in by more than 2 bolts - I'm still trying to find the 3rd bolt - 2 of the bolts are 10mm Hex Bolts at the top and bottom of the Taillight assembly when the rear tailgate is down. This loosens the assy - But somehow a third fasten point somewhen under the wheel well or behind the Bed Liner prevents me from getting it removed. There must be a simpler way to replace the Bulbs?
CORRECTION: To replace a tail light bulb in Toyota Tacoma 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 tail light
Lower tailgate, on the inside near the latch, remove the upper and lower 10mm bolts, the two without washers. The whole tail light assembly should now be loose, and move in and out a little bit. There are only 2 push-in plastic posts holding it now, so gently but firmly pull the assembly straight back and it will pop out. Wires will still be attached, don't pull too hard. Spray plastic post area with soap water to allow for easy removal.
Twist CCW and pull out the corresponding bulb sockets to replace the blinker, backup, or tail light bulbs.
UPDATE:
Check out the picture of the removed light assembly via the "Related Link" below. Those posts are flared. Meaning they're a pain to remove. It felt like I was about to break the assembly, but as long as you're pulling straight out, you should be fine. There's no other way....
