The 3rd row seats are not designed to be removed for daily use. However, removing the seats is easy and only takes a screwdriver and 13mm socket wrench.
With the seats in the "stored" position use your fingers to slightly pry apart the rear plastic stanchion covers. Insert the screwdriver and further pull the two halves apart to remove them. For the front covers simply pull outward on them.
Remove the four 13mm bolts per seat. Stand in the luggage area and pull down the release handle for the seat and simply lift it out of place. Replace the bolts in the holes so you don't lose them, and to keep the holes clean.
I bought a 5'x5' piece of rubber shower pan liner from Home Depot and cut it to shape for the cargo area and use that to cover the floor and protect the carpets when I'm hauling gear.
Removing or re-installing the seats takes me about 10 minutes.
