Well initially, you would do a coolant flush and renew the coolant. At this step you would replace the thermostat too. An additional step, in this repair, is to disconnect both of the heater hoses (there are two of them that go through the firewall on the passenger side) from the intake plenum-intake manifold and take a high pressure garden hose and flush one end of one of the heater hoses and collect the coolant from the other hose. Then reverse (the hoses) this process. This step is used to hopefully unclog any build-up of the orange coolant GM likes to use, in the heater core. This is also a great time to replace your heater hoses, if you haven't done so in a long time or ever. LOL
Sometimes after doing the following your heater will work great for a while and then start misbehaving. You will also monitor your coolant level like a hawk. Are you "topping it off" from time to time? If so, now you have to inspect the water pump closely and make sure it is not leaking - typically at the little pilot bearing, viewed best from below.
So now if the heater hoses aren't leaking, the radiator hoses aren't leaking and the water pump is not leaking but you are still topping off, you have to suspect a bad heater core. You can confirm this my pressure testing the cooling system or smelling the carpeting on the passenger side (the slanted area). You'll be able to smell the coolant there if you have a heater core leak.
If you have a leaking heater core you have to replace it and that repare is a real b-tch.
replace or repair. It will only get worse.
My 2001 Chevy Blazer was blowing cold air when I had the heat on. My husband flushed the line to the heater core and a bunch of junk came out and now my heat works great. If coolant is leaking inside your cabin, you have a leak in the heater core. The only repair is to replace the heater core. Most auto parts stores sell them.
There is a resistor/ circuit board near the heater motor that need to be replaced. You can get one from almost any auto parts store.
