Break out the old plaster and plaster over the area to seal the plaster surface. It is best to lower water level in the pool first but there are patch materials that work under water.

I am also looking for answers to this situation. My pool was poured today while it rained. The walls in part of the pool collapsed just after they shot the gunite. There are now large sections where the steel is exposed and I am sure those areas are filling up with water. If you can help or give any suggestions please contact me at coronado4@msn.com Thanks If there are chunks that have fallen and void areas, just reshoot those areas. The nice thing about gunite is there are no cold joints when you place new gunite over old gunite. Of course most guniters charge a setup fee just to show up at the job no matter how large it is, so small shoots are expensive.

How large is 'large' - I regularly repair fist sized holes in less than an hour.

"Gunite",is a name used to typically designate a mixture of 1 part Portland Cement and 4 parts sand thoroughly mixed dry, passed through a Gunite Machine, and conveyed by air through a rubber gunite hose, mixed with water at the nozzle, and deposited by air pressure. The large amount of air pressure serves to mix and compact the mixture. The result is a wonderfully smooth, hard surface.

Gypsum, or Plaster of Paris is made by mixing water with Calcium Sulphate hemihydrate. The name comes from a large Gypsum deposit found at Montmartre in Paris

Are they actually black (possibly black algae)? How large? Are they expanding? Are they rust spots? Frequently metal shavings from the mixer used on the plaster. Also other possibilities such as metals from the water supply source. A local professional, hopefully from the company that built your pool, should be able to analyze this. Tough to diagnose without visual input.

I spent many years in the pool business doing repairs. The only reference I have heard concerning marble was the use of marble dust in the plaster mix, both a fine and large grit used. Hope this helps.

Anything up to a foot square, I would replaster. Either trowel it in or use a piece of plywood bigger than the hole, put plastic film on it and enough plaster to patch the hole. Put it in place and either hold in place till the plaster sets, wedge a board under it or run a couple of sheetrock screws through the board and into the lath. After it dries remove the board and finish. Larger than a foot, I would cut a piece of sheetrock the right size, screw it up tape and mud it.
