How do you repair tailgate latch mechanism on 2001 Silverado 2500?

You first must take off the handle to see what your problem is. Most likely it is one of the plastic pieces that holds the release rods to the handle. To take the handle off there are three 14mm bolts on the inside of the tailgate.

i have a 1999 Chevy silverado and i do know that i had to take mine into dealer for replacement parts. check out the recalls for 1999-newer and they have the tailgate parts as recalled and will replace some of them for free, including free labor. hope that helps!

Spray lots of wd-40 in the driver side latch, there is a mechanism in there that allows power to flow to the motor when the tailgate is closed. more than likely it is just dirty and stuck. Thing is you have to get the tailgate open.
