Remove the inner door panel & you should be able to manually work the inner rods that control the operations of the latch assembly. If that doesn't work, I have had to actually do the above, & physically kick the rear section relatively hard to free up a lower rear latch mechanism that sometimes becomes rusted & will not allow the door to open.

This is not an easily undertaken project. If the sliding door is one known more commonly as a 'Pocket door' (slides into wall) you can do yourself a favor and employ a contractor as it becomes necessary to sometimes remove and replace a section of drywall to gain access for repair. If this door is a sliding closet door you should consult the manufacturer or their web site.
