You can't replace just the wheel bearings. You have to replace the whole hub assembly. Costs about 200 bucks per wheel at a repair shop. I have had both of mine replaced.
You can drive until the bearings fail, but this risks causing other damage and making the repair more expensive. If you know the bearings are failing and you don't plan on getting rid of the car in the near future, you may as well bite the bullet and get the bearings replaced.
You don't say on what machine. On motor vehicles, repair of front wheel bearings, means replacement. The bearings are changeable and are an interference fit, inside the hub. Knock the old ones out and press the new ones in. Care is needed in pressing the new ones in, so that pressure is exerted on the right part, to save damaging the new beaing. You generally need a haudraulic press, but could make a tool to wind it in using a long bolt or stud bar and suitable sized sockets.
i am pretty sure the front bearings are part of the entire hub assembly. replacing the bearings requires replacing the enitre front hub. at least that's how it was on my 97 dualie.
