Hi, The most likely cause is a defective head gasket. They normally fail where the push rods pass through from the cylinder to the head. A new gasket is around 20 dollars and is a relatively straight forward job. I normally charge around 75 dollars in my shop to replace a single head gasket, about one hour labor plus the gasket.
If you do not feel confident doing the repair, bring it to a reputable shop. It will be done correctly. Then again, it would be a good learning experience. It is critical to have a torque wrench for a newbie doing the job. Torque the head bolts to 25 lb. ft. by progressively tightening little by little. always tighten bolts opposite of each other similar to putting a wheel in a car. Get them all up to about 20 lbs then finalize to 25. run the engine for an hour and recheck. DO NOT use lubricant or never seize on the head bolts. the torque figures are with dry bolts.
its probably burning oil, if the smoke is white. if the smoke is black, it means its running rich. if the smoke is white, you have serious internal engine problems
Oil burning
white smoke comes out when you use wrong gAS, Like if itsays only UNLEADED and you put diesel,,then you will see white clouds.
no! if your seeing white smoke its a leaking cylinder head gasket. which is a major repair. see a certified auto tech to perform this repair.
my mower intermitling smokes a white smoke and fouls the plug over time. is the rings stuck?? will marvel mystery oil in the gas and oil eventually free up the rings??? thanks ,porbet @ aol.com
no... for there to be white smoke there is water in your combustion chamber if there was too much oil it would be black smoke Black smoke is usually to much fuel and blueish white is oil. So yes it is possible that it is oil in the combustion chamber.
to much oil in unit or it was tilted and oilleaked out of the case and the extra is being burned off
Probably to much oil in the crank case. Otherwise mixture control on carb. is off
White smoke exhaust usually means either a head gasket leak or an intake gasket leak. Both are cheaper to repair sooner than later.
Bad piston rings, oil level is too high, check the oil level and adjust
If it is a push mower there are only a couple things that will cause the mower to smoke. 1) The rings are worn and need replaced. This lets oil seep past the rings and burns the oil in the cylinder. This will cause a white smoke. (this is probably the most common cause for engines smoking) 2) The carburetor is putting too much gas in the engine. This will cause the engine to run rich and make a black smoke. 3) There is an external oil or gas leak that is leaking onto the motor and burning from the heat of the engine. If it is a riding mower there are many more things that could cause it to smoke.
white smoke usually means coolant is getting into the cylinders - check your oil to see if it overfull and or milky this bad news and can mean head gasket replacement or other major repair
