Evidently its an LED unit, not an incandescent bulb, therefore its not such a cheap fix. The unit costs well over $100. Good news is its really easy to fix if you have the lift gate style rear hatch. Simple as opening the lift gate - removing 2 screws - unplugging the unit and replacing it with the new one. I for one will not be spending the exorbitant amount of money just to have an extra brake light.

I have same year Tahoe and same problem. Check fuses first to make sure it isn't a fuse. The third brake light assembly can be removed by opening the back door and unscrewing the screws. Then unplug the connector. A new unit is about $175.00 and the whole unit must be replacee as it is LED light not bulbs.
